Oxford’s Ultimate Southern Bachelorette Pad
By Cali Larson

As you drive along down South Lamar Boulevard, you see a white three-story Victorian house with a spacious front porch, surrounded by tall trees. The thought runs through your head: “Where else would a classic Southern belle dream of living?”

So what makes this house the ultimate Southern bachelorette pad? This dream house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and plenty of spare room for constantly entertaining friends that drop in. The girls have decorated the entire house to reflect a feminine style that is both modern and classic at the same time. Accented with pink, green, brown, and white silk and velvet materials throughout the spacious rooms, it is evident that this house is inhabited by Southern girls.

The large kitchen, dining room, and living room are ideal for entertaining just a few girlfriends or having a full-fledged soiree. The girls hosted the Christmas party for Reformed University Fellowship, a ministry on campus, in December, said Brooke Adams, who lives on the second floor of the house. These Southern girls are never short on hospitality.

“We always have a visitor,” said Bekah Avery who lives in the loft located on the third floor of the house.

Five houses away from the Oxford Square, the house is only a short walk from the shops, restaurants and bars.

“ We love walking to the square when the weather is good- and it’s perfect for Double Decker, too,” said Kristin Davis, who shares the third floor loft with Avery.

Not only is the house decorated to the tee, it has a true southern history, too. The house, built in 1902, was once owned by John W. T. Falkner Jr., the uncle of William Falkner. In 1992, the inside of the house was used to film the movie, “ The Gun in Betty Lou’s Handbag.”

“ Even though the house is big, the girls make it very welcoming,” said Carolyne Wade, a frequent visitor to the house. She said that she loves going to visit because she always has a good time when she is there.

The Welcoming Entrance
The first thing that catches your eye as you walk past the big front porch and through the front door is an over-sized fireplace surrounded by an ornate white mantle. A winding staircase catches your attention and leads your eye up the dark wooden stairs. Under the staircase is a window seat with a green silk cushion, covered with green and brown silk pillows. The hardwood floors extend in front you to a long hallway, and to the left into the living room.

A True Lady’s Living Room
You find the décor of the living room to be perfectly fit for a group of Ole Miss girls. The room’s color scheme is pink, white and brown. A white love seat with a tufted back cushion and wooden accents faces a brown velvet couch and twin white chairs. In the corner is a set of matching high-backed pink chairs.

“We got most of our furniture from Ballard Designs and the Mustard Seed here in Oxford,” said Avery.

A large plasma TV is mounted to the wall in the corner, and large canvases of abstract art and a Marimekko cloth design stretched over a wooden frame take up other wall space. A small table bar is stocked with wine and martini glasses, and a hot-pink book on a shelf nearby is titled “Girl’s Night In: Your Fabulous Guide to Delicious Recipes and Treats.”
“ We love to have wine and cheese parties,” said McGuire, “ When we have a lot of girls over, we always end up having fun.”

Good Cookin’ in the Kitchen
The kitchen is decorated in classy shabby chic style. The cream breakfast table is distressed, exposing blue and black paint underneath the cream layer. Black distressed tall-back chairs surround the table. The wall is adorned with large metal stars with distressed cream paint showing. Under the stars, a decorative wooden board reads:
“ What happens with the girlfriends, stays with the girlfriends.”

The back door leads outside to a back porch with a swing, and a backyard bordered by a white picket fence.

“ We love having cookouts and sitting outside in the Spring and the Fall,” Adams said.
Whether it is a girls-only wine and cheese party, a Christmas Party with over a hundred people, or just a girl’s night in, this house is the ultimate place to live if you are a true Southern Belle. And as you finish your visit to the Ole Miss girl’s dream house, you won’t get far without hearing a “ Y’all come back soon!” from the front door.
